Moving in the city of Zurich in 10 steps – from the old town to the Zürichberg

Tram lines, blue zones, old buildings without lifts and hillside locations: a city move in Zurich needs more planning, which is why we break it down into ten steps.

    1. 01

      Initial consultation and survey

For a narrow stairwell or difficult access we come round; where access is easy, a video is often enough. Within 24 hours you have our quote for your Zurich move.

    2. 02

      Permit from the city

For the removal van, we apply for the appropriate day permit or special permit from the city's Dienstabteilung Verkehr (traffic department); the city bills the fee for this directly to you.

    3. 03

      Boxes for your city flat

We bring free packing material for your city flat about two to three weeks in advance, matched to the number of rooms and the amount of household goods.

    4. 04

      Loading window and route

We take tram tracks, one-way streets and rush hours into account when planning the route, so that the van is at the approved stopping point on time.

    5. 05

Protecting the stairwell in an old building

Without a lift, steps, banisters and flat doors are padded; in a new build the lift car is protected too, and floor protection covers all walkways.

    6. 06Optional

Furniture lift in the old town and on slopes

If a wardrobe will not go round the bends in an old-town or hillside house, we use the furniture lift if needed and bring it out via a window or balcony.

    7. 07Optional

      Office, laboratory, server room

We relocate workstations, laboratories and server rooms as an IT and laboratory move at times when your business is closed; files follow in an orderly archive move.

    8. 08

      Assembly in every city district

At the destination, our carpenters reassemble beds, wardrobes and shelves, whether the new address is in Oerlikon, Wiedikon or outside the city.

    9. 09Optional

Dropping off bulky items in your neighbourhood

The Mobiler Recyclinghof (mobile recycling centre) accepts individual items, metal or electrical appliances when it stops in your neighbourhood; we drive whole loads of furniture away for proper disposal.

    10. 10

      Final check with you

At the end, you check the rooms with us; we pack up protective blankets and film, and rearrange the last pieces of furniture as you wish.

    Moving in Zurich

What makes a move in Zurich special

In Zurich, the distance between the front door and the removal van often determines how long a move takes: narrow streets, blue parking zones, tram lines and older buildings without a lift. That is why we clarify access, floors and parking during the survey and, on request, arrange the no-parking zone with the responsible municipality.

Our headquarters are at Hertistrasse 29 in Wallisellen, right on the city boundary. From here we can quickly reach all city districts and the municipalities around Zurich.

After the move: deadlines in the canton of Zurich

Anyone moving to a municipality in the canton of Zurich must register within 14 days – in the city of Zurich online via eUmzug, provided your previous municipality participates. You must also report your new address for your vehicle registration and driving licence to the road traffic office within 14 days. You do not need to inform the radio and TV fee agency (Serafe) yourself; it takes the data from the residents' registration office.

    • Temporary no-parking zone: we arrange the zone with the municipality, provided we are asked in good time.
    • No Saturday surcharge: Same price Monday to Saturday.
    • End-of-tenancy cleaning with handover guarantee: for a smooth apartment handover in Zurich.
    • Quote within 24 hours: after an on-site or video survey.

    Parking on moving day

Day and special permits are issued by the Bewilligungsstelle der Dienstabteilung Verkehr at Mühlegasse 18. We apply there for the permit for your removal van free of charge, whether in the blue zone or in Kreis 1; the city bills the fee to you.

Responsible authority in Zurich: city police. Lead time according to the city: at least 7 working days (blue zone) or 3 working days (white zone) in advance. Fee according to the city: approx. CHF 120.– to 170.– for 1–2 parking spaces, max. 1 day. Applications can be made online.

    Information from the municipality

    Disposal and bulky waste

We take whole loads of furniture with us during the move, for CHF 65.– per m³ plus labour. Small quantities of bulky items, metal or electrical appliances can also go, without a car, to the Mobiler Recyclinghof of Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich in your neighbourhood.

With our moving service, you don't need to: we take it away directly during the move – CHF 65.– per m³ plus labour. View disposal

    Moving costs Zurich

Moving company Zurich: price factors between old buildings, trams and the Blue Zone

Our base in Wallisellen is right on the city boundary, around 6 km from Zurich as the crow flies, so the journey hardly affects an invoice based on working time. What counts far more is the distance between the front door and the removal van: narrow streets, tram lines, the Blaue Zone (blue zone with time-limited parking) and old buildings without a lift, for example in the Niederdorf in Kreis 1 (district 1). The calculator above shows the guide price with a 20% new-customer discount, and a cost ceiling is available on request.

      Customer portal for Zurich

Moving to the city of Zurich: a checklist for all twelve city districts

Whether Kreis 1 or Oerlikon: the city of Zurich is both a district in its own right and the capital of the canton. The customer portal turns your new Zurich address and moving date into a checklist with deadlines, plus letters for landlords, insurers and subscriptions. Direct links take you straight to the city's official offices.

      • City of Zurich Register your arrival within 14 days – online via eUmzug or at the counter.
      • Road Traffic Office Change the address on your vehicle registration and driving licence within 14 days.

Moving in Zurich: the checklist in the customer portal

      • Set up mail forwarding: Whether an old building without a lift or a new build: set up forwarding to your Zurich address at least 4 working days before the move, directly via the link in the portal.
      • Register your departure: If you are moving into the city from the surrounding area, you deregister with your previous municipality; if it takes part in eUmzug (online change of address), this can be done online, and the direct link is in the checklist.
      • Register your arrival: You report your arrival to the city of Zurich within 14 days, online via eUmzug or at the counter; the portal links to both, and then you tick off the task.

Removals in Zurich: old town, Zürichberg and blue zones

More than 5,000 people per square kilometre live in Switzerland's largest city. Where so many people live close together, we fix the stopping point, parking permit and carrying route bindingly before every move.

Old town on both banks of the Limmat

In the well-preserved medieval old town on both sides of the Limmat, we clarify during the survey how close the van can get, how long the carrying route will be and whether a furniture lift can take the strain off the stairwell.

Hillside locations on the Zürichberg and Uetliberg

On the slopes of the Zürichberg to the east and the Uetliberg to the west, we check the gradient, turning options and distance to the front door before the vehicle size is decided. For steep access, a furniture lift is added if needed.

Residential neighbourhoods with a blue zone

On streets and squares in the blue zone, parking is time-limited on weekdays. We therefore clarify before the appointment whether a day permit is sufficient for the removal van or a reserved stopping point is needed.

        Parking reservation

        Bewilligungsstelle der Dienstabteilung Verkehr

In Zurich, parking cards, day permits and special permits are issued by the Bewilligungsstelle der Dienstabteilung Verkehr (permits office of the traffic department) at Mühlegasse 18. We apply there for the right permit for your moving day, and the city bills the fee directly to you.

        Disposal

Mobiler Recyclinghof (Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich)

You can drop off bulky items, metal and electrical appliances without a car at the Mobiler Recyclinghof run by Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich (the city's waste and recycling service) right in your neighbourhood. We take care of whole loads of furniture and dispose of them properly for CHF 65.– per m³.

        International Moves

Moving abroad from the canton of Zurich

The canton of Zurich borders Germany. We also move you there and to other European countries – with an inventory list for customs and end-of-tenancy cleaning in Switzerland.

        Frequently asked questions

Moving in Zurich: frequently asked questions

Who is present at the flat handover in Zurich if you do the final cleaning?

Someone from our cleaning team stands beside you at the inspection. If the property management finds limescale, dust or stains, it is fixed on the spot, with no additional invoice. That way, the tenancy of your old Zurich flat ends with a single handover appointment.

Who takes care of the permits if moving out and moving in are in two different city districts?

We do, for both addresses, with the Bewilligungsstelle der Dienstabteilung Verkehr. Each address receives its own permit, and the city bills the fees directly to you. If the destination is outside the city, for example in Dübendorf or Zollikon, we submit the second application to the municipality there.

How do you get a piano out of an old Zurich flat without a lift?

From CHF 250.–; in an old building without a lift, the floor is what counts most. Our porters bring the padded instrument down step by step; if a bend is too tight, we switch to the furniture lift. We set the price after looking at the stairwell.

Where does your team put the boxes in the new Zurich flat?

Directly in the room written on the box. So label your boxes with the destination room, such as kitchen or children's room, and hang a simple plan on the door of the new flat. We position furniture according to your instructions so that nothing has to be carried twice.

Where in Zurich can I drop off household items in good condition that are not coming with me?

At the swap point of the Mobiler Recyclinghof run by Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich, when it stops in your neighbourhood. Everyday items in good condition can be dropped off there free of charge and taken by others. Furniture and larger quantities left over we take away on moving day for proper disposal.

When does a small move charged by the hour make sense in Zurich?

For small jobs such as a room in a shared flat, a studio or a few pieces of furniture from Wipkingen to Oerlikon. After the minimum of three hours, we charge in 15-minute increments, not per hour or part thereof. Short city moves thus stay affordable.

When does the Mobiler Recyclinghof stop in my Zurich neighbourhood?

The city's personal waste calendar shows this; you create it for your street and house number and can import it into your digital calendar. The Entsorgung + Recycling Zürich app also sends you reminder notifications. Plan your decluttering so that one stop falls before moving day, and we will take care of the rest.

What will your team pack for us if we both work full-time in Zurich?

Everything, if you like: kitchen, bathroom, wardrobes, books and decorations. We bring the materials, protect fragile items individually and label every box with the room in the new Zurich flat. You only decide what comes along and what stays behind.

What support do older people get when moving into a retirement flat in Zurich?

We first plan with you which furniture will fit into the often smaller retirement flat, and set it up there so that familiar pieces find their place again. Our team handles packing, carrying and assembly; anything left over we take away for disposal on request.
