Moving in Uster: what we pay attention to
Uster doesn't have a classic medieval old town like other Zurich towns – but it has its own pitfalls for route planning. As a "roundabout town", Uster has replaced most of its traffic lights with roundabouts, and around ten level crossings cross the railway lines, which together are closed for well over half an hour every hour. If you don't know the route, the furniture van ends up waiting at the barrier for far too long. The Uster city police are responsible for no-parking zones – we take care of the application before moving day arrives.
Many former factory buildings from the textile industry era – Uster was a centre of cotton processing in the 18th and 19th centuries – have now been converted into housing, some of them honoured with the Wakker Prize. Such conversions often come with heavy industrial doors, high ceilings and not always a lift that is big enough for moving furniture. In Kirchuster and Niederuster, the two largest districts around the station and the centre, parking is also often tight on moving days. The outlying hamlets of Riedikon, Nänikon, Wermatswil and Freudwil are more rural, but some access roads are narrow and unpaved.

Getting to know Uster
Moving company Uster: a town made up of eleven districts
With 36,791 inhabitants (as of 2022), Uster is the third-largest town in the canton of Zurich and the largest municipality in its district by area. Since the union of 9 July 1927 it has consisted of eleven districts that used to be independent civil communities. Some have grown together into an urban core, while six outlying hamlets (Aussenwachten) still stand as villages in open countryside. For planning a move, it is therefore not only the street that matters, but also the district.
How big the districts are
The figures from the town's population statistics (as of 31 March 2026) show how different the parts of Uster are:
- Kirchuster with around 11,050 inhabitants, the largest district
- Niederuster with about 7,500 inhabitants, to the west near Lake Greifensee and south of the station
- Oberuster-Nossikon with about 5,200 inhabitants, Oberuster slightly elevated east of the station
- Winikon-Gschwader with about 4,200 and Rehbüel-Hegetsberg with about 3,500 inhabitants
- The villages of Nänikon (about 2,850), Wermatswil (about 1,250), Riedikon (about 750), Sulzbach (about 400), Werrikon (about 360) and Freudwil (about 150)

Hills, marshland and lakeshore
Wermatswil sits on high ground between the town centre and Pfäffikon, and Freudwil is almost entirely surrounded by forest. Werrikon, in turn, is separated from the central districts by the Werrikerried–Glattenried nature reserve, and Riedikon, first mentioned in 741 and thus the oldest settlement in today's town area, lies close to the shore of Lake Greifensee.
