From the Seeland to the Oberland, the canton spans three major regions, and there are large differences in altitude between Wynau at 399 m above sea level and the Bernese Alps. A flat in Biel calls for different planning than a chalet in the Oberland, where access and carrying distance can take more time. The Canton of Bern has the greatest north–south extent of all Swiss cantons. It stretches from the Jura across the Mittelland into the Alps and, apart from Vaud, is the only canton with a share of all three of Switzerland's major regions. It is the second-largest canton by area after Graubünden and by population after Zurich: as of 30 September 2025, 1,075,516 people lived here. Since the Laufental moved to Basel-Landschaft in 1994, Bern has been a landlocked canton with no foreign border; since Clavaleyres went to Fribourg in 2022, Münchenwiler has been the last Bernese exclave.
The lowest point is on the Aare near Wynau at 399 m above sea level, the highest on the Finsteraarhorn at 4274 m. In between lie the Bernese Alps with the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger, the Prealps with the Emmental and the Napf, and in the north-west the Bernese Jura, part of the Folded Jura.

The Aare rises at the Unteraar Glacier in the Grimsel area and flows through Lake Brienz, Lake Thun and the Wohlensee, and since the Jura water correction also through Lake Biel. At 47.85 square kilometres, Lake Thun is the largest lake in the canton, followed by Lake Biel and Lake Brienz; Bern also has a share of Lake Neuchâtel. Other important rivers are the Emme, Simme, Kander, Saane, Broye and Suze.
West of the city of Bern, between Lake Biel and Lake Murten, lies the Seeland, which thanks to its fertile soils is known as Switzerland's vegetable garden. In the north-east lies the Oberaargau, which despite its name does not belong to the Canton of Aargau.
