Even before the merger, the boundary between Rapperswil and Jona was barely recognisable even to locals, because the area in between had long been built up. On 1 January 2007, the two municipalities also became one politically, together with Kempraten, Wagen and Bollingen. Today, with 28,836 residents (as of 2025), Rapperswil-Jona is the second-largest town in the canton after St. Gallen and also the largest Swiss town without a parliament. On the Seedamm between the Obersee and Lake Zurich
The town lies in the south-west of canton St. Gallen on the right shore of Lake Zurich. The Stampf lido lies on the shore in Jona, and Circus Knie has its headquarters and winter quarters here.
