For a long time Kaltbrunn was plagued by flooding. Only the Linth Canal, stream engineering around 1830 and new canals from 1879 to 1883 drained the area. The Kaltbrunner Riet, a fen of national importance since 1994, is what remains of the former marshland; two observation towers stand in it.
