Getting to know Wald

Wald lies in the highest part of the Tössbergland, in the upper Jona valley on the border with canton St. Gallen. The municipality includes the villages of Wald and Laupen as well as some 125 hamlets and isolated farms. In total, Wald had 9,945 residents (as of 2018). Our base in Wallisellen is around 29 km away as the crow flies; as movers in Wald, we therefore factor the longer journey into our planning from the start.
Almost 700 metres of altitude difference within the municipality
The lowest point is near the Grundtal at 565 m above sea level, the highest on the Brandegg at 1243 m. The Jona alone drops 180 m within the municipality. A good half of the area is farmland, a third is forest and only around 9% is built-up. The summits of the Hüttchopf and Tössstock lie on the municipal boundary, while the Bachtel and Batzberg stand just outside it.
This is decisive for furniture transport, because the historic Wachten (traditional hamlet districts) are located very differently:
- Hittenberg, the Wacht with the fewest residents, on a terrace at around 900 metres, home to the Zürcher Reha-Zentrum (rehabilitation centre)
- Hüebli above the Sagenraintobel gorge, with farmsteads on the steep slope of the Scheidegg
- Güntisberg-Mettlen on the Batzberg with substantial farms
- Ried on a terminal moraine on the watershed between the Töss and the Jona

Laupen and the old pilgrim routes
Historically, Laupen is not regarded as an outlying Wacht but as a village in its own right, and in the 19th century it was a separate civil community. Ried was densely populated early on because the pilgrim route to Einsiedeln passes through it. In Blattenbach stand the Rickenbach farm, first mentioned around 820, and the pilgrim inn «zum roten Schwert», built in 1530. Around old buildings like these, we plan the stopping place and carrying route with particular care and use a furniture lift if needed.
