The municipality ranges from 445 metres at Chüeweid up to 778 metres on the Batzberg, with neighbourhoods such as Fägswil, Ferrach, Widacher or Schlossberg that have retained their village character despite Rüti's town status. Around Rüti Abbey, founded in 1206, and the listed Reformed church, the buildings have grown historically, so access here is correspondingly tighter. At the junction of main roads 15 and 345 and near the two A53 motorway junctions, there is more traffic at rush hour. The former industrial quarter of Joweid, once home to the Rüti engineering works and other textile businesses, is now mainly occupied by the service sector.

Getting to know Rüti

The name tells you how it all began: «Rüti» means a piece of land that has been cleared and made arable. In 972 the place appears as Riutun in a charter of Emperor Otto II, and the district of Fägswil as early as 807. Today Rüti has 12,170 inhabitants (as of 2018), which makes it a town, even though it never acquired a town charter and life has stayed rather village-like. Factories that shaped the place
Economic growth only came in the 19th century. In 1847 the Caspar Honegger weaving machinery factory was founded in the Joweid, later the Maschinenfabrik Rüti with connections worldwide. It was followed in 1873 by the Hess nail factory in Pilgersteg, in 1886 by the Baumann spring factory and in 1895 by the central heating maker Johann Müller AG. Since 1859 Rüti has been on the Zurich–Uster–Rapperswil railway line.
