Getting to know Obfelden
Moving company Obfelden: five hamlets «above the field»
The name is explained by its history. In 1640 the pastor of Ottenbach referred to the five hamlets of Unterlunnern, Oberlunnern, Wolsen, Toussen and Bickwil collectively as the «gmeinden ob dem feld» (communities above the field). On 15 February 1847 they separated from Ottenbach and founded the municipality of Obfelden. To this day, the coat of arms shows five golden ears of grain, one for each hamlet. In the very year of its founding, the Battle of Lunnern took place here, when Sonderbund troops tried in vain to cross the Reuss. At the end of 2018, Obfelden had 5,592 inhabitants.
Chilenfeld: the centre that came later
Chilenfeld is the youngest part of the municipality, created only after the separation from Ottenbach. The Reformed church was built in 1847 to plans by Ferdinand Stadler, largely financed by the silk manufacturer Rudolf Stehli-Hausheer. Over the following decades the hamlet of Chilenfeld grew up around the church and parsonage, with the Villa Stehli of 1877, the school buildings and the municipal hall of 1929. In 1837 Stehli had founded a cotton weaving mill in Oberlunnern, later Stehli Seiden, and thereby set off the industrialisation of the village.
