Getting to know Rümlang

The place name gives away the location: the second syllable goes back to «wang», meaning meadow slope or grassy hillside. Rümlang does indeed lie on a slope that falls gently to the east. For a long time it was a farming village with around 1100 inhabitants; in 2018 there were 8,170. Our base in Wallisellen is around 6 km away as the crow flies.
What the airport has changed
In 1948, the construction of Zurich-Kloten Airport brought jobs, and around 76 ha of municipal land went to the airport. The population then rose rapidly, and many new residential buildings and businesses sprang up around the old village centre. Nevertheless, the people of Rümlang still feel their municipality is a village.

Katzenrüti and the hamlets
From 1769 to 1785, the model farmer Jakob Gujer, known as Kleinjogg, who wanted to reform agriculture in Zurich, worked in the hamlet of Katzenrüti. Goethe visited him there in 1775 and 1779, as a memorial plaque recalls. In the 18th century, many people in Rümlang had turned to cottage industry and knitted stockings, which displeased Kleinjogg because fields lay fallow.
