Getting to know Hombrechtikon

The name goes back to an Alemannic clan founder: Hombrechtikon means «farm of Humbracht». It first appears in records in 1194 as hunbrestinchon. Today the municipality has 8,756 inhabitants (as of 2018) and lies around 22 km as the crow flies from our base in Wallisellen.
The Reformed church of Hombrechtikon is the work of Jakob Grubenmann, who rebuilt it as a Rococo church in 1758/59; the tower still dates from the late Gothic predecessor building. The Catholic church of St. Niklaus from 1968/69 echoes the forms of Le Corbusier's Notre-Dame-du-Haut. The village proper sits above the lake on the ridge of the Pfannenstiel. Down on the shore lies the locality of Feldbach with the SBB station, where the S7 stops every half hour. The station in the village, served by the Uerikon-Bauma railway from 1901 to 1948, no longer exists. Anyone moving from the village to Feldbach or vice versa therefore changes altitude noticeably.
