For over 200 years, Uetikon was shaped by the chemical industry – CU Chemie Uetikon, founded in 1818, was long considered the oldest continuously operating chemical factory in Switzerland. Since 2018, the Kantonsschule Uetikon am See has stood on the former factory site, and a new lakeside promenade is being created as part of the site's redevelopment. Uetikon am See station is served by the S6 and S7; there is no direct motorway junction on the right bank of the lake – access is via Seestrasse.

Since 2018 Uetikon has also had a Kantonsschule (cantonal grammar school), initially in temporary premises on the Riedstegwiese in the village centre; later it is to move to the site of the former chemical factory.
