Getting to know Zumikon

Zumikon lies on the western flank of the Wassberg, which at 748 m above sea level belongs to the Pfannenstiel chain. From the right shore of the lake, it is around 200 metres up to the village. 5,284 people lived on its 548 hectares (as of 2018); a good third of the area is built-up, while agriculture and woodland each account for 27.6%.
A village centre above the railway
In 1977, the Forchbahn railway and the road in the village centre disappeared underground. A new village centre was built on the resulting roof in 1982 – an «ideal village» for some, for others a symbol of the «Swiss spirit set in stone» of the 1980s. The village bypass had already opened in 1963, and Zumikon has had a Forchbahn station since 1912.

Old hamlets, new developments
Zumikon first appears in 946 as «de Zumminga», in the same year as the hamlets of Gössikon («Cozinchova») and Waltikon («Waltlinchova»). Even older is a late Bronze Age terraced settlement near Gössikon on the Küsnachtertobel (Küsnacht gorge). In 1467 the village had just six households; in 1850, 230 people worked from home, most of them in silk weaving. Today's Reformed church was built in 1730/31 on the site of an older chapel.
The «Seldwyla» cooperative is quite different: founded in 1967 by six architects, it forms a small village of its own, named after Gottfried Keller's collection of novellas. Zumikon has also had a golf course since 1930, and the car manufacturer Rinspeed is based here too. Depending on the address, our movers in Zumikon plan as follows:
