Moving in Illnau-Effretikon: what we pay attention to
Covering almost 33 square kilometres, Illnau-Effretikon is the fourth-largest municipality in the canton of Zurich and correspondingly diverse: Illnau sits on a hill along the middle course of the Kempt, with a church dating back to the 8th century, while Effretikon, the larger district with its own railway station and motorway junction, forms the commercial centre. Anyone moving in the old village centre of Illnau will know the narrower streets – in Effretikon access is more generous, but there is more traffic around the station and the motorway exit. Since the 2016 merger, Kyburg with its historic 11th-century castle, as well as the hamlets of Billikon, Brünggen, Ettenhusen, Mülau, Neu-Brünggen and Seemerrüti, have also been part of the town – here it is much more rural, and some access roads are narrow for large removal vans. Getting to know Illnau-Effretikon

In 1796 Effretikon was a hamlet of eleven households. The station of 1855 started its rise; after 1918 Effretikon already had more inhabitants than Rikon, and in 1974 the municipality of Illnau officially became the town of Illnau-Effretikon. At the end of 2024, 17,756 people lived here. Our base in Wallisellen is only around 10 km away as the crow flies.
On both sides of the Kempt
The Kempt divides the municipality into two landscapes. On the left bank, Bisikon, Rikon and Effretikon lie in hilly country that separates the Kempt valley from the Glatt valley, along with a landscape of fens and ponds. On the right bank follow Mesikon, Horben, Agasul, Luckhausen and Ottikon, and beyond them the molasse landscape becomes increasingly hilly and wooded. Illnau itself sits on a hill along the middle course of the Kempt. Further back still, on a spur above the Töss, lies the village of Kyburg, part of the town since the 2016 merger. The highest point is the Brünggberg at 689 m above sea level.

Almost all place names go back to the Alemanni. Illnau, recorded around 745 as «Illinauuiae», recalls a man called Illo, Effretikon one called Erpfrat. Agasul probably means «Ago's pig pen», and the river name Kempt comes from the Gaulish «Kambā», the crooked one. South of Effretikon stands the ruin of the Moosburg, built in 1254 by Count Hartmann IV of Kyburg and destroyed in 1444 during the Old Zurich War. The church of Illnau is mentioned as early as the 8th century, whereas the Reformed church of Effretikon is a brutalist building from the 1950s.
