Moving in Lindau: what we pay attention to
Lindau lies in the district of Pfäffikon on the watershed between the Kempt valley and the Glatt valley, between Zurich and Winterthur. The Lindau municipal administration is responsible for a temporary no-parking zone on moving day; the Zurich cantonal police, with a station in Effretikon, handles traffic monitoring on site, as Lindau has no municipal police force of its own. We take care of the application for you.
The municipality consists of the four historic villages of Lindau, Tagelswangen, Winterberg and Grafstal, as well as Kemptthal and the smaller hamlets of Eschikon and Kleinikon. Lindau is best known as the birthplace of Maggi seasoning: Julius Maggi founded his factory in Kemptthal in 1869, later run by Nestlé and since 2002 by Givaudan – today a new business location, «The Valley», is being developed on the site. The historic village centre grew up around the Reformed church, documented since 1274 and rebuilt between 1894 and 1896. Kemptthal station is served by the S7 and S24, bus line 650 runs between Effretikon, Lindau and Kemptthal, and the A1 motorway is close by.

Getting to know Lindau

From our base in Wallisellen to Lindau is only around 7 km as the crow flies. Lindau lies between Winterthur and Zurich on the watershed between the Kemptthal and the Glatttal and is regarded as the gateway to the Zürcher Oberland. A third of the municipal area is forest.
Where people live and in what numbers
The 5,717 residents (as of 1 January 2023) are unevenly spread across the villages:

So the village that gives the municipality its name is actually the smallest. In addition there are the hamlets of Eschikon and Kleinikon. Separate civil communities until 1970
Grafstal, Lindau, Tagelswangen and Winterberg were long independent civil communities. They looked after the water supply, field paths and fire brigade, and until 1954 even had their own waste disposal. They were only finally dissolved in 1970. Even so, the individual parts of the municipality have kept their village character.
Until 1711, the residents of Tagelswangen, Grafstal, Winterberg and Kleinikon sometimes had to travel far to Illnau for church services; then they were assigned to the parish of Lindau. In church, the four civil communities sat separately from one another for a long time. The present neo-Gothic building was built in 1895/96 to plans by Kehrer and Knell; Julius Maggi sat on the building committee, and among the donors was Caspar Appenzeller, founder of the Annagut girls' home. There is evidence of a school in Lindau as early as 1638. Since 2022, the Reformed parish has formed the Kirchgemeinde Breite together with Bassersdorf-Nürensdorf and Brütten.
Short distances to the region
Lindau was first mentioned in 774, when the Alemannic Blitgaer gave his property in Lindau and Eschikon to the Abbey of St. Gallen. The name probably refers to a settlement surrounded by water with linden trees, and the linden still features in the coat of arms today. After 1798, Lindau first belonged to the district of Bassersdorf and the Bülach region, and since 1831 it has been part of the Pfäffikon district. Today the municipality borders the districts of Bülach to the north, Winterthur to the east and Uster to the south. It is served by Kemptthal station and buses run by the Verkehrsbetriebe Glattal.

Tagelswangen, the largest village
With around 2400 people, Tagelswangen is home to the largest share of Lindau's residents. On streets with marked parking bays, parking is only permitted within the bays, so we reserve the bays in front of your house for the removal van.
Grafstal and Kemptthal
These two villages lie near Kemptthal station on the Zurich–Winterthur line. Many municipal roads are at most five metres wide, so we clarify in advance where a larger vehicle can stop without blocking the road.
Winterberg, Eschikon and Kleinikon
Winterberg and the two hamlets lie somewhat off the beaten track on the watershed between the Kemptthal and the Glatttal. For houses here, we determine during the survey which vehicle size makes sense on the access roads.

GemeindeverwaltungFor removals, the Gemeindewerke (municipal works) can close off parking bays adjoining your property. We submit the application to the Gemeindeverwaltung Lindau; according to the municipality, the no-parking restriction must be signposted 72 hours in advance.
