Getting to know Oberengstringen

For a long time, Oberengstringen was off the beaten track: the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn railway ran on the left bank of the Limmat, and the Limmattal tramway went via Schlieren and Unterengstringen to Weiningen without touching the village. Only when Höngg became part of the city of Zurich in 1934 did Oberengstringen become a direct neighbour of the big city, and a building boom set in. A village that grew in a short time
In the second half of the 20th century, the infrastructure had to catch up quickly: a municipal building, churches, shops, schoolhouses and a cemetery of its own were built. The Catholic church of St. Mauritius on Zürichstrasse was built in 1961–1962, and the Protestant church in the village centre in 1984.
