Step by step
Your Moving Plan in 4 Phases
A move consists of many small tasks with fixed deadlines. If you know them and start in good time, you can move in a relaxed way. This overview shows what you should do when – with the official offices and deadlines in Switzerland.
4–6 weeks before the move: contracts and quotes
Obtain quotes for the move and book the on-site survey. Cancel or transfer subscriptions, electricity and internet: Swisscom recommends at least 10 days' notice, Sunrise ideally one month and Salt Home at least 5 weeks. Inform your insurers and health insurance provider of your new address – with household contents insurance, it is worth checking the sum insured for the new apartment.
2–3 weeks before: authorities, post and parking
Submit your change of address with mail forwarding to the Post Office – no later than 4 working days before the move. Report your departure to your municipality, in many municipalities online via eUmzugCH. Sort out parking for the removal van; we will organise a temporary no-parking zone for you, provided you ask in good time.
The final week: neighbours, handover, valuables
Inform your neighbours, confirm the date for the apartment handover and pack documents and valuables into a separate folder that you transport yourself.
After the move: registration and IDs
Register with your new municipality – usually within 14 days. In the canton of Zurich, you must also update your vehicle registration and driving licence at the Road Traffic Office within 14 days. You do not need to report the radio and TV licence fee yourself: Serafe takes over the data from the residents' registration office.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving Planning
When should I start planning my move?
Ideally 6 weeks before the move. That leaves enough time for cancellations, quotes, moving your internet and the no-parking zone. Salt Home, for example, requires at least 5 weeks' notice to move your internet connection.
How far in advance do I need to set up mail forwarding with the Post Office?
At least 4 working days before the move. The change of address with mail forwarding is subject to a fee; the Post Office's additional change-of-address notification is free of charge.
Within what deadline must I register with my new municipality?
Usually within 14 days of the move, including in the canton of Zurich. In many municipalities, this can be done online via eUmzugCH.
Do I need to inform Serafe about my move?
No. Serafe uses the data supplied monthly by the municipalities' residents' services. If something is wrong, contact your residents' registration office.
How early do I need to report moving my internet connection?
