From the Weinland to the lakeshore: removals in the Canton of Zurich in 6 steps

From Wallisellen we reach every region of the canton quickly, but city neighbourhoods, the Goldküste, the Oberland and the Weinland place very different demands on moving day.

    1. 01

      Discuss region and address

Whether it is an older building in the city, a housing estate in the Glatttal or a farmhouse in the Weinland: we survey by video or on site and then send a written quote.

    2. 02

      Application for the parking spot

For space on public ground, we submit the application to the municipality you are moving out of or into; the authority invoices the fee.

    3. 03

      Lakeshore and hillside locations

On densely built-up Lake Zurich there is little space in front of the building, and on the Pfannenstiel and Zimmerberg gradients are added; if needed, we provide a furniture lift.

    4. 04

      Oberland and Weinland

For farmsteads and village centres between the Schnebelhorn and the Rhine, we check access and turning space and choose a smaller vehicle on minor roads.

    5. 05Optional

      Businesses outside office hours

In Zurich, Winterthur and around the airport, we relocate offices, IT and laboratories outside business hours, and files as an archive move on request.

    6. 06

      Assembly and completion

At the destination, we assemble the furniture and go through the flat with you; if you change municipality, you register there, and the customer portal helps with this.

    Moving costs, Canton of Zurich

Removals in the Canton of Zurich: costs from our base in Wallisellen

Wallisellen lies in the middle of the canton, close to its geographical centre in Wangen-Brüttisellen. The outward and return journey, which counts as working time, is therefore usually short. Flat size and access carry more weight: along the almost completely built-up lakeshore and in the city neighbourhoods, space in front of the building is tight, while in the Oberland and the Weinland access roads and gradients are more of an issue. The calculator above shows the right guide price.

    • Vehicle Report your new address to the road traffic office within 14 days.

    • Set up mail forwarding: If you are moving to Winterthur, Kloten or Dietikon, set up Swiss Post mail forwarding at least 4 working days before the move; the direct link is in the portal.
    • Report your departure: Even when moving within the canton, you deregister with your previous municipality, which throughout the Canton of Zurich is done via eUmzug (online change of address). The checklist links to it.
    • Register your arrival: You must register with your new municipality, for example in the Limmattal or the Zürcher Oberland, within 14 days. The portal calculates the deadline from your moving date.

Canton of Zurich at a glance

Moving in the Canton of Zurich: region, districts & tips

With around 1.6 million residents, the Canton of Zurich is the most populous canton in Switzerland. It stretches from the Rhine and the Weinland in the north via the city of Zurich and Lake Zurich to the Zürcher Oberland and is divided into 12 districts.

Regions and towns where we move

        • City of Zurich with all 12 city districts
        • Limmattal and Furttal (Dietikon, Schlieren, Regensdorf)
        • Glattal and Zürcher Unterland (Wallisellen, Dübendorf, Kloten, Bülach)
        • Lake Zurich: left shore (Thalwil, Horgen, Wädenswil) and right shore (Küsnacht, Meilen, Stäfa)
        • Winterthur, Weinland and Zürcher Oberland (Uster, Wetzikon, Hinwil)

Moving tips for the Canton of Zurich

        • In Zurich's old town (Niederdorf, District 1) the lanes are narrow and access is restricted – we plan short carrying distances or a furniture lift in advance.
        • In the city of Zurich, a parking restriction in the Blue Zone must be requested from the city police at least 7 working days in advance – we take care of the organisation.
        • On Lake Zurich and in the Oberland, hillside locations with steep, narrow access roads are common – we clarify this during the survey.

Getting to know the Canton of Zurich

Removals in the Canton of Zurich: 160 municipalities, twelve districts, one base

With 1,620,020 inhabitants (end of 2025), Zurich is the most populous canton in Switzerland and, with 925 people per square kilometre, the most densely populated after the two city cantons. It lies largely in the Swiss Plateau; the far south-east is pre-Alpine, and the north-west takes in the easternmost foothills of the Jura. Our base in Wallisellen is right in the middle of the canton – its geographical centre is in nearby Wangen-Brüttisellen.

        Regions with their own character

The capital dominates the canton, but the regions differ greatly – and so do the demands placed on a removal:

        • City of Zurich: the valley of the Limmat and Sihl between Uetliberg, Hönggerberg, Zürichberg and Adlisberg, for removals in the city of Zurich
        • Limmattal: heavily built up and partly merged with the city, for example with our moving company in Dietikon
        • Zürcher Unterland: with the urbanised Glatttal and the airport, for our removals firm in Kloten; Furttal, Wehntal and Rafzerfeld are more rural
        • Weinland and Winterthur region: the Weinland is sparsely populated, Winterthur is the second-largest city in the canton – removals in Winterthur
        • Lake Zurich: the Goldküste (Gold Coast) on the right bank with the Pfannenstiel behind it; on the left, Zimmerberg and Hirzel
        • Zürcher Oberland: suburbs, rural areas and former industrial centres such as Uster and Wetzikon
        • Knonauer Amt and Sihltal: the Säuliamt behind the Albis ridge, rural in character, with Affoltern am Albis

        Lakeshores, hills and Oberland valleys

The highest point is the Schnebelhorn at 1291 m, the lowest is at 330 m on the Hochrhein (High Rhine) near Weiach. The Uetliberg, the city's local mountain, belongs to the Albis ridge, which rises to 915 m. Besides Lake Zurich, the canton has two other larger lakes, the Greifensee and the Pfäffikersee. The Glatt runs entirely within the canton, while the Töss and Sihl shape their own valleys. With the Rafzerfeld, Zurich even has territory on the right bank of the Hochrhein. Two centuries ago, the water power of the Oberland's abundant mountain rivers and streams marked the beginning of Swiss industry.

Along the almost completely built-up lakeshore and in the city neighbourhoods, space in front of the building is tight; in the Oberland and the Weinland, access roads and gradients are more of an issue. We clarify the parking spot, carrying route and vehicle size during the free survey; where necessary, we organise the parking reservation and a furniture lift.

Municipalities with their own tax rate

The canton has 160 political municipalities, 33 of which have at least 10,000 inhabitants. Each Gemeinde (municipality) sets its own Steuerfuss (municipal tax rate); the twelve districts, by contrast, are merely decentralised administrative units without autonomy of their own. Anyone moving within the canton may therefore also change their tax rate. District boundaries have changed too: today's Dietikon district was created in 1989 from eleven former rural municipalities of the Zurich district, and in 2016 Illnau-Effretikon and Kyburg merged.

        Short journeys from Wallisellen

From Wallisellen, we handle short moves between neighbouring municipalities as well as relocations right across the canton, for example from the Weinland to the Säuliamt. We carry out office relocations in the Glatttal or the city outside business hours, and private removals also on Saturdays without a Saturday surcharge. Furniture assembly, end-of-tenancy cleaning, disposal and furniture storage can be booked directly as extras.

        Frequently asked questions

Do you also do removals to the Zürcher Weinland and the Rafzerfeld?
Yes. The Weinland in the north between Winterthur and Schaffhausen is sparsely populated, and the Rafzerfeld lies on the far side of the Rhine. For rural addresses, we clarify access and vehicle size during the survey, and the quote follows within 24 hours.

Do you handle moves to the Knonauer Amt behind the Albis?
Yes. The Knonauer Amt, also known as the Säuliamt, is separated from the rest of the canton by the Albis ridge and is predominantly rural. We handle removals there from the city of Zurich and from all other regions of the canton.

        Local moving logistics

Removal logistics in the Canton of Zurich: from lakeshore to Oberland

More than 1.6 million people live in the Canton of Zurich in a confined area, yet there are also pre-Alpine valleys and sparsely populated stretches of land. We therefore adapt the vehicle, parking spot and carrying route to the region rather than following a standard procedure.

Lake Zurich with the Goldküste and Zimmerberg

Directly behind the lakeside municipalities, the Pfannenstiel and Zimmerberg rise up. Down by the shore there is a lack of space for the removal van; higher up on the slopes, gradients and narrow access roads are added. We check both before quoting.

        Glatttal and Zürcher Unterland

The central Glatttal is highly urbanised and closely merged with Zurich around the airport. From our base in Wallisellen the journeys here are short; what matters are large housing estates with lifts and a reserved parking spot.

Zürcher Oberland up to the Schnebelhorn

In the south-east, the canton reaches into the pre-Alps, with suburbs and former industrial centres such as Uster and Wetzikon in between. For rural addresses, we clarify whether a smaller vehicle will make better progress on minor roads.

        Zürcher Weinland

Between Winterthur and Schaffhausen lies the most sparsely populated region of the canton. For farmhouses and village centres, access and room to turn matter more than parking rules, so we plan the approach individually.

        Parking reservation

Whether in a city neighbourhood or on a village street: where the removal van has to stand on public ground, we submit the application for the parking reservation to the responsible office of your municipality. Any fee for the reservation is billed to you by the municipal office itself.

        Disposal

We dispose of furniture and household items that are not coming with you properly throughout the canton for CHF 65.– per m³. You can hand in smaller quantities at your municipality's collection point; details can be found in the local waste calendar.

        B2B

IT, laboratory and office relocations in the Canton of Zurich

The internationally minded city of Zurich, Winterthur as the second-largest city and the Unterland around the airport are the canton's economic centres. We relocate businesses outside operating hours, including IT, laboratory and archive moves.

        Very competent and fast.
I was very satisfied with the moving services and the cleaning work. The furniture was properly packed and handled with care. The subsequent cleaning was also carried out professionally, so the handover went through without any issues. What's more, all the staff were extremely friendly. I can only recommend the company.
The move went perfectly. The team was upbeat, friendly and very careful. They also worked extremely efficiently, so they were even faster than originally planned. On top of that, the price was very good. I can warmly recommend Swiss Umzüge.

Frequently asked questions about moving in the Canton of Zurich
