With 1,620,020 inhabitants (end of 2025), Zurich is the most populous canton in Switzerland and, with 925 people per square kilometre, the most densely populated after the two city cantons. It lies largely in the Swiss Plateau; the far south-east is pre-Alpine, and the north-west takes in the easternmost foothills of the Jura. Our base in Wallisellen is right in the middle of the canton – its geographical centre is in nearby Wangen-Brüttisellen.
Regions with their own character
The capital dominates the canton, but the regions differ greatly – and so do the demands placed on a removal:
- City of Zurich: the valley of the Limmat and Sihl between Uetliberg, Hönggerberg, Zürichberg and Adlisberg, for removals in the city of Zurich
- Limmattal: heavily built up and partly merged with the city, for example with our moving company in Dietikon
- Zürcher Unterland: with the urbanised Glatttal and the airport, for our removals firm in Kloten; Furttal, Wehntal and Rafzerfeld are more rural
- Weinland and Winterthur region: the Weinland is sparsely populated, Winterthur is the second-largest city in the canton – removals in Winterthur
- Lake Zurich: the Goldküste (Gold Coast) on the right bank with the Pfannenstiel behind it; on the left, Zimmerberg and Hirzel
- Zürcher Oberland: suburbs, rural areas and former industrial centres such as Uster and Wetzikon
- Knonauer Amt and Sihltal: the Säuliamt behind the Albis ridge, rural in character, with Affoltern am Albis
Lakeshores, hills and Oberland valleys
The highest point is the Schnebelhorn at 1291 m, the lowest is at 330 m on the Hochrhein (High Rhine) near Weiach. The Uetliberg, the city's local mountain, belongs to the Albis ridge, which rises to 915 m. Besides Lake Zurich, the canton has two other larger lakes, the Greifensee and the Pfäffikersee. The Glatt runs entirely within the canton, while the Töss and Sihl shape their own valleys. With the Rafzerfeld, Zurich even has territory on the right bank of the Hochrhein. Two centuries ago, the water power of the Oberland's abundant mountain rivers and streams marked the beginning of Swiss industry.
Along the almost completely built-up lakeshore and in the city neighbourhoods, space in front of the building is tight; in the Oberland and the Weinland, access roads and gradients are more of an issue. We clarify the parking spot, carrying route and vehicle size during the free survey; where necessary, we organise the parking reservation and a furniture lift.
Municipalities with their own tax rate
The canton has 160 political municipalities, 33 of which have at least 10,000 inhabitants. Each Gemeinde (municipality) sets its own Steuerfuss (municipal tax rate); the twelve districts, by contrast, are merely decentralised administrative units without autonomy of their own. Anyone moving within the canton may therefore also change their tax rate. District boundaries have changed too: today's Dietikon district was created in 1989 from eleven former rural municipalities of the Zurich district, and in 2016 Illnau-Effretikon and Kyburg merged.
Short journeys from Wallisellen
From Wallisellen, we handle short moves between neighbouring municipalities as well as relocations right across the canton, for example from the Weinland to the Säuliamt. We carry out office relocations in the Glatttal or the city outside business hours, and private removals also on Saturdays without a Saturday surcharge. Furniture assembly, end-of-tenancy cleaning, disposal and furniture storage can be booked directly as extras.
Frequently asked questions
Do you also do removals to the Zürcher Weinland and the Rafzerfeld?
Yes. The Weinland in the north between Winterthur and Schaffhausen is sparsely populated, and the Rafzerfeld lies on the far side of the Rhine. For rural addresses, we clarify access and vehicle size during the survey, and the quote follows within 24 hours.
Do you handle moves to the Knonauer Amt behind the Albis?
Yes. The Knonauer Amt, also known as the Säuliamt, is separated from the rest of the canton by the Albis ridge and is predominantly rural. We handle removals there from the city of Zurich and from all other regions of the canton.
