The Reformed church stands right on the lakeshore. Friedrich Wehrli designed it in the neo-Gothic style, and it was built from 1888 to 1891. Opposite it, since 1974/75, stands the Catholic church of St. Agnes with a sculpture by Silvio Mattioli on the façade.
Much older still is the settlement site of Erlenbach-Winkel. Divers and archaeologists found lakeside dwellings of the Pfyn culture (2766 BC) and the Corded Ware culture there. According to Aegidius Tschudi, «Erlibach» was first mentioned in writing in 981, and during the Old Zurich War two battles were fought near Erlenbach in 1444 and 1445.
Between Küsnacht and Herrliberg
Erlenbach lies on the «Goldküste» (Gold Coast), as the lower right-hand shore of the lake is called. Küsnacht borders it to the north and Herrliberg to the south. Erlenbach also shares its coat of arms with Küsnacht: the silver cross dates from 1597 and goes back to the Knights of St John's house in Küsnacht, to which the people of Erlenbach owed dues until 1703. The three municipalities are close together on the overall Steuerfuss (municipal tax rate) for 2026 excluding church tax: Erlenbach 76%, Küsnacht and Herrliberg 73% each, compared with 119% in Zurich.
