Until the mid-1950s Spreitenbach was a farming village with a few businesses and a gliding airfield. Then came a building boom unlike any other. On the drawing board, «Neu-Spreitenbach» took shape, a planned satellite town with high-rise estates and large commercial zones. Because a ban on unmarried cohabitation was in force in the canton of Zurich at the time, demand for housing in Aargau, and here in particular, rose sharply. The oil crisis of the 1970s slowed the plans, and a new zoning plan in 1981 brought a move away from high-rise construction. Even so, the population has increased more than sixfold since 1960, to 12,587 inhabitants (as of the end of 2024).
Two faces of one municipality
The old village centre on the southern edge of the settlement, with the Dorfbach stream flowing through it, has largely kept its original character.
