Getting to know Niederrohrdorf

The name reveals the landscape: Niederrohrdorf goes back to the Old High German Rorthorf, the "reed village". Between the moraines on the valley floor, alluvial clay has formed several wetlands, and in the forest between Niederrohrdorf, Stetten and Mellingen lies the Taumoos, a raised bog of national importance. The village itself lies three kilometres from the Reuss at the foot of the Rohrdorferberg, a 702-metre-high elevation of the Heitersberg chain.
Moraines, valley floor and Oberrohrdorf
The valley floor consists of gravel deposited by the Reuss glacier in the last ice age. It is crossed by lateral moraines with differences in height of up to 50 metres, the most striking being the Hiltiberg in the north. The built-up area has grown together completely with the higher-lying Oberrohrdorf. A move between the two municipalities is therefore short but can still involve a fair amount of climbing. Niederrohrdorf's highest point, at 530 m above sea level, is in the Rotrisch area, two kilometres north of the centre.
