Getting to know Ehrendingen

For 181 years, Oberehrendingen and Unterehrendingen went their separate ways. They had split in 1825, and on 1 January 2006 the municipality of Ehrendingen was formed again. Today the two parts of the village have grown seamlessly together, following the Dorfbach stream, which rises on the northern flank of the Lägern. At the end of 2025, 4,919 people lived here. Both villages, then still physically separate, were hit by major fires in the 19th century: Oberehrendingen in 1821 and Unterehrendingen in 1832.
A notch between the Lägern and the Surbtal
Ehrendingen lies in a side valley of the Surb that runs north from the Höhtal, the 500-metre pass into the Limmat valley, down to the Surbtal. To the south rises the Lägern, the north-easternmost spur of the Folded Jura; its Burghorn, at 859 m above sea level, is the highest point in the municipality. Right down by the Surb the land lies at 425 m, the Steinbuck rises to the east, and the foothills of the Siggenberg stretch away to the west.
More than 400 metres of altitude within one small municipality means that not every address is equally easy to reach. A residential village with commuters to Baden and Zurich
There was a brief industrial chapter: from 1892 to 1902, the Lägern cement works employed up to 400 workers. After that, the village barely grew until the 1950s, and in Unterehrendingen the population even fell at times. Then, thanks to the proximity of Baden and Zurich, lively building activity began. PostBus instead of a railway station
Ehrendingen has no railway station of its own. In 1915 a Surbtal railway from Niederweningen to Döttingen with a stop in Unterehrendingen was planned, but it was never built. Today three PostBus routes run through the village from Baden station. Main road 17 between Döttingen and Dielsdorf runs along the northern edge, and cantonal road 279 leads to Baden.
