When BBC was founded in neighbouring Baden in 1891 and grew rapidly, there was no space there for new residential areas. Natural boundaries frame it all around: the Limmat to the west and south, the Sulperg (569 m above sea level) to the east and to the north the steep southern slope of the Lägern, partly planted with vines. On the Burghorn the municipality reaches 859 m above sea level, on the Limmat only 360 m.

Monastery, seminary and station
On 14 October 1227, monks from Salem founded Wettingen Abbey in a loop of the Limmat, and it became the most important landowner in the region. In 1841 the Grand Council dissolved all monasteries in Aargau; from 1847 the teacher training college moved into the buildings. The station was built in 1876 in a central location between the monastery precinct and the village, after the Nordostbahn had moved its route to the right bank of the river at the request of a spinning mill owner.
Today two S-Bahn lines stop at the station. Incidentally, Switzerland's first railway, the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn, still passed Wettingen on the other side of the river in 1847.
