Getting to know Bülach

Bülach has been the capital of the district of the same name since 1831, when it emerged from the former Oberamt Embrach. At the end of 2023 the town had 24,186 inhabitants. It was first mentioned as early as 811 as Pulacha, and in 1384 it was granted town rights under Duke Leopold III of Austria, mainly because of its favourable location on trade routes.
An old town that burned three times
Bülach was already fortified with walls in the 13th century. The town burned down in 1386 during the Sempach War, a second time in 1444 during the Old Zurich War, and in 1506 another fire destroyed a large part of the country town. Today's town hall was built in 1672/73, the Reformed church between 1508 and 1514. Near the town centre, Alemannic graves revealed the Bülach fibula, which as of 2013 was the only find in Switzerland bearing a runic inscription.
