Getting to know Oberriet
Moving company Oberriet: five villages, one plan
Oberriet is more than one village. Besides the main settlement, the political municipality includes Montlingen, Kriessern, Eichenwies and Kobelwald, each with its own Ortsgemeinde (local community), as well as hamlets such as Moos, Rehag, Stieg, Freienbach, Stein, Watt and Hard. Only around a third of the population lives in the village of Oberriet itself. In total, the municipality has 9,140 inhabitants (as of 2022) on 34.5 square kilometres, making it one of the larger municipalities in the Canton of St. Gallen. The people of Oberriet even own an alpine pasture outside the municipal area: the Alp Sämtis near Brülisau in the Canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden.

From 407 to 1302 metres
The municipality stretches from the Alpine Rhine in the east to the foothills of the Alpstein in the west. The lowest point, at 407 m above sea level, is at the Dreibruggen over the Rheintaler Binnenkanal (Rhine Valley inland canal), and the highest is in the Zapfen area at 1302 m. Between the villages lie nature reserves and agricultural settlements in the Riet (reclaimed marshland), which were created after the regulation of the Rhine. Three industrial sites
East of the village of Oberriet, Jansen AG produces steel and plastic pipes; with around 700 jobs, it is the largest employer in the municipality. In Eichenwies, Rino Weder AG manufactures windows, doors and façades, and CHT Switzerland AG is based in the Letzau industrial area near Montlingen. Since December 2013, a train in each direction has stopped every hour at the reactivated Oberriet station, and a bus interchange makes the village a transfer point. The A13 has junctions in Oberriet and Kriessern. Why do you not take the Waldstrasse when moving from Oberriet to Appenzell?
The Waldstrasse via Tonisweid to Eggerstanden turns into a relatively narrow gravel road on Innerrhoden territory. That is not a sensible route for a loaded removal van, so we take the main roads. The somewhat longer route is already factored into the quote, and your household goods arrive without a bumpy ride.
What do you look out for at a farm in the Riet settlements near the Dreibruggen?
Farm roads without passing places, the load-bearing capacity of field tracks and enough space to turn the vehicle. After heavy rain, we check with you at short notice whether the track is still passable and, if necessary, switch to the smaller vehicle.
