Getting to know Altstätten
Moving company Altstätten: a market town between the Rhine plain and the Alpstein
Altstätten sits right on the edge: the town hall stands at 462 m above sea level, exactly where the flat Rhine plain meets the foothills of the Alpstein. To the east and south the view opens onto the plain, while to the north and west Kamor, Fäneren, Hirschberg and St. Anton close off the horizon. The municipal area stretches from 410 m on the plain up to the Hoher Kasten at 1795 m above sea level. At the centre lies the town with the adjoining Vorstadt. A townscape from the days of trade
Altstätten is first recorded as a town as early as 1298. Major fires, in 1410 and in 1567 with 175 buildings destroyed, changed the place several times. In the 18th century the linen, silk and cotton trade brought prosperity; many houses of the wealthy merchants of the time still shape the townscape today. In older buildings like these, we check during the free survey whether large furniture will fit through the stairwell or whether a furniture lift is the better solution.
Two railway stations and four borders
The railway has run through the Rhine Valley since 1858, and back then Altstätten had to fight hard for its station. Today the line to Gais also connects the town with the Appenzell region. The municipality borders both Appenzell half-cantons, Vorarlberg and the Principality of Liechtenstein. With 11,730 inhabitants (as of 2018), Altstätten has been a regional centre since the Middle Ages and was the capital of the Oberrheintal district until 2003.
