Getting to know Buchs SG

Buchs is the centre of the Werdenberg region in the canton of St. Gallen. On 31 December 2025, 14,287 people lived in the municipality, which covers 15.95 km² and includes the villages of Buchs, Altendorf and Räfis. Buchs is a transport hub with connections to SBB, ÖBB, PostBus, local buses and the motorway. A town that grew with the railway
The place is mentioned as early as 765 under the name Pogio. In 1517 Glarus bought the area, and in 1526 the Glarus bailiff Jost Tschudi introduced the Reformation in Buchs too. However, it owes its present role mainly to the railway: in 1872 the Vorarlberg Railway opened the line to Feldkirch, and with the bridge over the Rhine, Buchs became a border station. From 1884, with the Arlberg Railway, the station lay on the Vienna–Paris axis. After a flood in 1927 damaged the old Rhine bridge, today's bridge to Schaan was built in 1935. To this day Buchs is regarded as the most important Swiss border station to Austria for freight traffic.
The former goods yard is no longer needed; the town plans to redevelop the site into «Rheincity» for services and housing.
