Widnau covers just 4.22 km², almost 60% of which is built-up area. Because of its population, the Federal Statistical Office counts the municipality as a town. On 1 January 2020, 9,686 people lived here, known locally as the Widnouer. Widnau has only been a political municipality in its own right since 1883; before that it belonged to Diepoldsau.
