In Aarburg, a narrow, steeply rising rock spur reaches right down to the riverbank and closes off the valley. It is an offshoot of the 664-metre Säli, the westernmost part of the Engelberg ridge. The medieval old town forms a triangle between the Aare and the wedge-shaped rock barrier.
