Getting to know Gränichen

At over 17 square kilometres, Gränichen is the eighth-largest municipality in Aargau by area, and more than half of it is forest. The large village lies in a valley basin that is on average only about 500 metres wide. On either side, ranges of hills over 100 metres high rise up with steep slopes and small plateaus. Anyone moving here lives either on the flat valley floor or somewhere on a slope, and that makes a difference.
Hills, side valleys and three hamlets
On the left side of the valley lie Manzenberg, Wällenen, Moosberg, Heidberg and Pfendel, which at 615 m above sea level is the highest point in the municipality. On the right are Fuden, Räckholderen, Breitenberg and Surberg. Near the southern boundary, three hamlets belong to Gränichen:

Even before industrialisation, Gränichen had mills, forges, oil presses and tobacco mills.
