Getting to know Thal

The Buechberg, 525 metres high, runs right through the middle of the municipality. It separates the so-called inner Rhoden (districts), Thal and Buriet, from the outer Rhoden of Altenrhein, Buechen and Staad. In 1924 a branch of the Dornier works turned the fishing village of Altenrhein into an industrial settlement; this later gave rise to the Flug- und Fahrzeugwerke Altenrhein and companies such as Stadler Rail. In Thal, the shopping trolley manufacturer Wanzl has operated a branch since 1972, and numerous other companies have settled in Buriet. This is also where the A1 junction is, with a motorway police base and a testing centre of the Strassenverkehrsamt (road traffic office).
