Walenstadt lies where the Churfirsten mountains meet the Walensee. To the south, the Churfirsten drop almost vertically from 2306 m to Walenstadtberg and down to the Walensee at 419 m. The small town lies on the eastern shore of the lake, where the Seez and the Binnenkanal flow in. Where goods were once transshipped
In the Middle Ages, the waterway from the Rhine via Lake Zurich and the Walensee towards Italy ended in Walenstadt. In the Sust (historic warehouse) on Hafenplatz, goods were transferred from ships to carts, because before 1848 there was no overland route from Weesen to Walenstadt. Between 1240 and 1260 the town was given a town wall. The name, incidentally, means «on the shore of the Romansh»; the old spelling Wallenstadt, corrected in 1952, can still be read on the front of the Walenstadt weaving mill.
The climate is shaped by the lake, the Föhn wind and the Bise (cold north-east wind), with an average annual temperature of 10.5 °C; in places, even palm trees grow. The lakeshore was not always peaceful: in the 18th and 19th centuries, river blockages in Walenstadt and Weesen increasingly led to flooding, until the major Linth corrections were completed in 1816. From the mid-19th century, the draining of the Seez Valley followed.
