Goldach lies on the southern shore of Lake Constance and had exactly 9,872 inhabitants on 31 December 2025. The municipality borders Rorschach, Rorschacherberg, Untereggen, Mörschwil, Tübach and the Thurgau exclave of Horn. The Goldach river flows right through the municipality and enters the lake here. Grown together from two villages
Goldach has been an independent political municipality since 1803. Around the middle of the 19th century, Ober-Goldach and Unter-Goldach grew together, and in 1889 they also merged politically. Between 1880 and 1910 the place flourished thanks to the embroidery and fashion industry; during this period the railway station was built in 1886 and the Riet industrial zone was laid out. After 1945 Goldach was initially an industrial municipality, and from the 1970s zoning increasingly turned it into a residential community. A merger with Rorschach and Rorschacherberg was examined in 2007 but did not come about.
