Getting to know Möriken-Wildegg

The double name says it all. Until 1951 the municipality was officially called just Möriken; today it consists of two villages a little over a kilometre apart that differ markedly. Wildegg (359 m above sea level) lies where the Aabach flows into the Aare. The village grew up around a mill at the mouth of the valley, and in the 18th and 19th centuries it became a scene of the industrial revolution: Indienne calico printing at Laué & Cie., hat braiding from 1848, a cement works from 1889, later a copper wire insulation plant and a durum wheat mill. The villa district with buildings such as the Lauégut (1790) and the Amslergut (1800) also dates from this period. Since 15 May 1858 Wildegg has also had a railway station on the Brugg–Aarau line.
