From the Gaiser family's forest to three church villages
Gaiserwald was originally a field or forest name meaning «forest of the Gaiser family». Abtwil is first mentioned in 1200 as Appowila, and a Petrus de Gaiserwalt appears in 1282. For a long time the municipality consisted only of scattered farms and hamlets and therefore had no church of its own. That only changed in 1661, when the Abbot of St. Gallen consecrated the first church in St. Josefen; its patron saint, Saint Joseph, gave the village its name, and for a long time St. Josefen was the centre of civic and church life. In 1775 a church followed in Engelburg, dedicated to the three guardian angels.
Today the municipality has 8,360 inhabitants (as of 2018), and each of the three villages has a church. Traces of the castle sites Alt-Meldegg and Spisegg still remain. Well-known names from the municipality include the show jumper Markus Fuchs, born in Abtwil and an Olympic silver medallist, and National Councillor Fritz Hofmann, born in Engelburg.
