What makes a move to Madrid special

Applying for street occupancy for your move in Madrid
The Ayuntamiento de Madrid grants the «Ocupación temporal de la vía pública para mudanzas puntuales», online via the electronic register or in person at a registry office. A permit is required, among other things, if a vehicle over 3500 kg, a lifting platform or a furniture lift is used. You must submit the application at least 20 calendar days before the date. The 2026 tariff is 60.52 euros for the document plus 0.58 euros per linear metre and day for the reserved parking area; for angled parking a 50 per cent surcharge applies. Access with the removal van
Madrid ZBE: access rules
The Madrid ZBE covers the entire city area, plus the stricter zones ZBEDEP Distrito Centro and ZBEDEP Plaza Elíptica. Lorries and vans without a DGT environmental badge were only allowed into the Madrid ZBE until 31 December 2024. Vehicles with a B or C badge may only enter the ZBEDEP Distrito Centro to park in a public car park, a private garage or a reserved space. (Source: madrid360.es)
The traffic authority DGT restricts the movement of goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight on certain days and at certain times. This rule applies nationwide except in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarre, which have their own traffic powers. (Source: dgt.es)
After moving in
Registering in Madrid after your move
Registration in the residents' register (Padrón) takes place in person at the Oficinas de Atención a la Ciudadanía of Línea Madrid, and only by appointment (cita previa). You can book the appointment online via «Cita previa para Padrón», by phone on 010 (in Madrid) or 914 800 010, or via the Línea Madrid chat. Bring an identity or residence document and proof of address, such as a valid tenancy agreement, the title deed (escritura) or a Nota simple del Registro de la Propiedad. Don't forget: before you leave, deregister with your Swiss municipality of residence and set up mail forwarding to Madrid in good time.
Less volume, lower costs
Bulky items: dispose of them in Switzerland before the move or in Madrid?
Whatever isn't coming to Madrid doesn't need to cross the border. We dispose of it beforehand in Switzerland – for CHF 65.– per m³ plus labour.
The city collects furniture and bulky items free of charge; requests are made by phone on 010, via the city website or the Madrid Móvil app. In addition, each neighbourhood has a fixed day each month on which households may put out up to 3 m³ and no more than 6 items on the street between 9 and 11 p.m. – household goods from a move are excluded.
