On 31 December 2025 Gossau had exactly 18,943 inhabitants, making it the fourth-largest town in the canton of St. Gallen. It lies in the Fürstenland between St. Gallen and Wil, in a hollow bounded to the south by the Appenzell hills. The whole municipal area covers 2751 hectares.
