From farming village to motorway junction
Weiningen was first mentioned on 8 February 870 as Winigon. The patronage of the parish church of St. Peter belonged to the barons of Regensberg; in the middle of the 12th century the parish passed to the Fahr monastery, and in 1435 the judicial rights went to the Zurich family Meyer von Knonau.
Until well into the 20th century the village remained strongly agricultural. This only changed slowly with the Limmattal tramway, which ran a branch line from Schlieren to Weiningen from 1901 to 1931. Today the A1, opened in 1971, and the A4, opened in 1985, cross on municipal territory at the Limmattaler Kreuz motorway junction.
