Oberurdorf and Niederurdorf were only united into one municipality on 1 January 1931. The Zurich Grand Council had wanted the merger as early as 1830, but Niederurdorf successfully resisted at the time. In the late Middle Ages Oberurdorf was the larger part, with a manor farm, a mill on the Schäflibach and a tavern; Niederurdorf was just a small hamlet. Oberurdorf is also home to the old Reformed church, first mentioned in 1184 as the chapel of St. Nicholas.

Valley basin, moraine and the Hohbüel
The settlement area lies in a valley basin formed by the Reuss glacier. In the Reppisch valley, behind Honeret and Egg, lies the highest point, the Hohbüel (587 m above sea level) – a good 170 metres above the municipality's altitude of 416 m. A third each of the area is forest and farmland, and a good quarter is settlement area (as of 2007).
