Moving in Winterthur: what we pay attention to
Winterthur can't simply be driven through with a standard lorry. Anyone moving in the old town around Marktgasse, Obertor or Steinberggasse knows the problem: the lanes in the historic core are narrow, partly pedestrianised and simply impassable for a furniture van. Here you need a spot for the furniture lift as close as possible to the nearest accessible road – and usually moving signage, which is applied for from the Winterthur city police. If you only realise this on moving day, you'll be standing at a locked door with the lift.
There are peculiarities outside the old town too: on the Sulzer site and in the Lagerplatz quarter, many former factory buildings are now lived in as lofts or used as offices – with high ceilings, heavy industrial doors and sometimes no lift designed for furniture transport. We check this out beforehand, not with the sofa already in our hands. In the residential districts of Veltheim, Seen, Töss, Wülflingen, Oberwinterthur and Mattenbach, the situation is usually more relaxed, but even there parking gets tight on moving day, especially in the more densely built-up areas near the main station.
