Getting to know Birr

Until the mid-1950s Birr was a modest farming village. Then, from 1957 to 1963, Brown, Boveri & Cie. built a large manufacturing plant here, and the Wyde estate with 500 flats was built right next to it for the many employees. In just ten years the population grew fivefold; at the end of 2025, 4,868 people lived in Birr.
Flat plain, steep wooded slope
The village lies on the western edge of the Birrfeld, a wide plain between the Aare and Reuss rivers with no hills worth mentioning. Directly to the south, by contrast, rises the steep, wooded northern flank of the Chestenberg, a spur of the Folded Jura that reaches 645 m above sea level within the municipality. Birr has grown completely together with Lupfig; the old boundary between the villages can no longer be seen in the landscape.

Pestalozzi at the Neuhof
In 1771 the educational reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi moved to the Neuhof on the southern edge of the village. Together with his wife Anna he took in around 40 children and combined spinning and weaving with school lessons until the institution had to close in 1780 for financial reasons. Today the Neuhof is a vocational training home. The Habsburg castle, ancestral seat of the Habsburgs, is also only three kilometres to the north-west on the Wülpelsberg.
