In the history books Villmergen stands for two battles: in 1656 the Catholic cantons won in the Himmelrych area, and in 1712, in the extremely bloody second battle, the Bernese. Today Villmergen is a municipality of 8,290 inhabitants (as of the end of 2025) with several clearly separate settlement areas. If you are moving here, you should know which of them you live in.
Village, Bally quarter and Hilfikon
- The village lies on the western edge of the Bünztal, at the foot of the wooded Rietenberg. To the east it has grown together with Wohlen.
- The Bally quarter lies around three kilometres to the north between Dintikon and Dottikon, having grown up around the former Bally shoe factory.
- Hilfikon lies at 479 m above sea level near the southern municipal boundary in the valley of the Erusbach and has belonged to Villmergen since 1 January 2010. Hilfikon Castle towers above the village.

Between church hill and plain
The neo-Gothic parish church of St. Peter and Paul from 1866 stands on a terrace and towers over the whole village, with the Nothelferkapelle (chapel of the Fourteen Holy Helpers) above it.
