A young municipality with an old church
Neuheim is mentioned as early as 1087, and the church «unsere Lieben Frau von Neuheim» (Our Lady of Neuheim) for the first time in 1173. As a political municipality, however, Neuheim is young: until 1848 the area belonged to the «Gemeinde am Berg», then the parish, independent since 1675, separated from Menzingen and became the eleventh municipality of the canton. Since 1942 its coat of arms has shown a green lime tree on a green hill.
After the decline of silk weaving, the population shrank considerably in the 19th century. Only between 1970 and 2000 did it grow strongly again, by almost 146 per cent.
