Greifensee grew up around its castle, whose predecessor was probably built by a Count of Rapperswil as early as the 12th century. The name, «Griiffesee» in dialect, has applied equally to the castle, the little town and the lake since the 13th century; around 1300 the lake was sometimes still called Glattsee. Zurich's first bailiwick
The little town never had market rights and remained poorly connected, so it hardly developed economically. In 1402 Greifensee passed to the City of Zurich as a pledge and became its first Landvogtei (bailiwick). In the Old Zurich War the castle was destroyed in 1444; of 64 defenders, only two survived. It was not until 1520 that the Zurich council decided to rebuild it. Later, Salomon Landolt, bailiff from 1781 to 1786, became famous as Gottfried Keller's «Landvogt von Greifensee». With the creation of the district of Uster in 1831, the town lost its role as an administrative centre.
