Thalwil is built in terraces on the slopes of the Zimmerberg above Lake Zurich – from the lakeshore up to the upper neighbourhoods there are considerable differences in altitude, so access roads are correspondingly steep and in places narrow. In the historic Platte district around the Reformed church and near the Pfistergut, now the local museum, there is particularly little space for large removal vans. Where the silk industry of Robert Schwarzenbach & Co. once shaped the town, companies such as u-blox, Unisys and Papyrus are now important employers – many of them in the Böni industrial quarter, which has existed since 1971.
