At the end of 2024, «Dübi» had 32,469 inhabitants, and between 2012 and 2024 the population grew by more than 20 per cent. On top of that come 20,605 employees. Politically, Dübendorf has been a town since 1974.
Glatt Valley and Adlisberg
The town lies at around 440 m above sea level on the Glatt, eight kilometres east of Zurich city centre, from which it is separated by the Adlisberg; the direct crossing is at 606 metres. The districts of Dübendorf, Gfenn, Hermikon and Stettbach lie in the upper Glatt Valley. The outlying hamlets of Gockhausen, Geeren and Dübelstein, by contrast, are on the northern slope of the Adlisberg and thus already on the edge of the Zurich Oberland.

Lazariterkirche, Dübelstein Castle, Wil church
In Gfenn stands the 13th-century Lazariterkirche, a landmark of national importance that once belonged to a monastery with a leper hospital. Since 1967 it has been used as an interdenominational church and is popular for weddings and concerts. On the slope of the Adlisberg, the ruin mound of Dübelstein Castle recalls mayor Hans Waldmann, who acquired it in 1487. The castle burned down in 1615; its foundations were excavated in 1942/43 and are open to the public today. Beneath the Reformed church of Wil, archaeologists found walls of a Roman estate. Hermikon is mentioned as early as 858, Dübendorf in 946 as «Tuobilindorf». A Roman road once led from Stettbach via Wil and Hermikon to Uster, and a now-forgotten castle site, the Schyterburg, probably guarded the route into the Glatt Valley in the 10th or 11th century.
