The canton of Schwyz lies between Lake Zug, Lake Lucerne and Lake Zurich and borders seven cantons: Uri, Glarus, St. Gallen, Zurich, Zug, Lucerne and Nidwalden. It belongs to Central Switzerland and at the same time to the Zurich metropolitan region. With 169,205 inhabitants (as of 30 September 2025) it is the most populous of the founding cantons. The capital is Schwyz, but the largest municipality is Freienbach on Lake Zurich.
Its structure is unusual: the 30 municipalities are spread across six districts, and unlike in most cantons these are autonomous self-governing units. Both municipalities and districts set their own taxes. Einsiedeln, Küssnacht and Gersau each form a district consisting only of the municipality of the same name. The district of Schwyz is the only one that still holds a Landsgemeinde (open-air citizens' assembly), and corporations such as the Oberallmeindkorporation Schwyz are recognised under public law.
Anyone moving between districts therefore also moves into a different tax environment. We plan the move itself the same way everywhere: with a free on-site survey and a quote within 24 hours.
The official language is German; between the end of 2016 and the end of 2018, 88.4 per cent named German as their main language, but 5.9 per cent also named English. For households relocating from abroad, a survey via WhatsApp video is an easy way to get a quote. The dialects in the canton belong to Highest Alemannic – with one exception: in the district of Höfe the dialect is close to Zurich German. The north-south divide even shows in the word for “evening”: «Òòbig» in Höfe, «Oubig» in Einsiedeln and March, and otherwise «Aabet» as in the neighbouring cantons.
So Höfe on Lake Zurich sounds almost like Zurich, while the district of Schwyz sounds like Central Switzerland. A move from Freienbach to the capital is therefore also a change into a different dialect landscape.
Most of the canton belongs to the Schwyz Pre-Alps. In the south-east, in the Glarus Alps, the Bös Fulen stands on the cantonal border at 2,801.8 m above sea level; the highest summit entirely within Schwyz is the Grisset at 2,721 m above sea level. Flats on the lakeshore, on hillsides and in pre-Alpine villages make different demands:
As early as the 14th century, chroniclers in the Empire collectively called the Confederate allies «Schwyzer». Today Schwyz is a canton with 82,994 employees and around 15,000 workplaces (as of 2017), with a good quarter of jobs in industry, and an unemployment rate of 1.3 per cent (January 2026). Where in March do movers operate, from Lachen on the Obersee to Siebnen?
In all municipalities of the district, including Altendorf and the other villages between the Obersee and the Linth plain.
