Getting to know the canton of Solothurn
Removals in the canton of Solothurn: a canton in several parts
Hardly any canton has such a fragmented shape as Solothurn. It lies on the Swiss Plateau and in the Jura between Bern, Basel-Landschaft, Aargau and Jura, and borders Alsace in France. Its offshoots reach as far as Dornach near Basel, deep into Bernese territory and almost to Aarau in the east. With 291,075 inhabitants (as of 30 September 2025) and 368 people per square kilometre, it has the sixth-highest population density of any canton.
Exclaves and the route over the Passwang
The canton includes several exclaves: Kleinlützel as well as Rodersdorf, Hofstetten-Flüh, Metzerlen-Mariastein and Bättwil border France, while Steinhof is entirely surrounded by the canton of Bern. The Schwarzbubenland north of the Jura is directly connected to the rest of the canton only via the Passwang; the first road there dates from 1730, the summit tunnel from the early 20th century.
A move within the canton can therefore cross another canton's territory or a Jura pass. That is why we clarify the route and the loading space at both addresses during the free viewing.
Three towns, three profiles
The capital is Solothurn, but the most populous municipality is Olten, followed by Grenchen. Each of the three towns has its own character:
- Solothurn: service centre with the highest share of incoming commuters in the canton
- Olten: railway hub at the crossing of the Basel–Bern and Basel–Lucerne lines, the Jura foot line and Zurich–Bern
- Grenchen: one of the largest centres of the Swiss watch industry, home to Breitling and the movement manufacturer ETA
The Schwarzbubenland is oriented towards Basel, and the Lebern district is the most industrial. The municipality with the largest area is Mümliswil-Ramiswil in the Solothurn Jura. The highest point is the Hasenmatt on the Jura ridge near Selzach at 1445 m. Since 2000, Solothurn has grown the most among the larger towns, ahead of Olten and Grenchen.
Logistics corridor on the A1 and A2
South-west of Olten, the A1 Zurich–Bern and A2 Basel–Lucerne motorways meet at the Härkingen interchange; the Belchen tunnel near Hägendorf takes the A2 through the Jura. Near Luterbach, the A5 branches off towards Solothurn and Grenchen to Biel. This location has attracted many transport and logistics companies to the Olten/Gäu area, including Swiss Post's parcel and letter centres in Härkingen and the Migros distribution centre in Neuendorf.
For businesses in commercial and industrial zones, we schedule office and business moves outside working hours so that warehouses and offices are quickly up and running again. Parking reservation
StrassenunterhaltskreisIf the removal van stands on a cantonal road, this counts as occupying public space and must be approved by the responsible Strassenunterhaltskreis (cantonal road maintenance district). For municipal roads, we ask the responsible office of your municipality. The authority bills the fees.
Disposal
You drop off household quantities of recyclables at your municipality's collection point; the rules differ from place to place. We take away discarded furniture and larger amounts of bulky waste and dispose of them properly at CHF 65.– per m³.
