Bütschwil-Ganterschwil was created on 1 January 2013 from two previously independent municipalities. Before that, the two villages had long gone their separate ways: from 1831 Bütschwil belonged to the Alttoggenburg district, while Ganterschwil stayed with Untertoggenburg. In the vote of 27 November 2011, 82 % said yes in Bütschwil and 54 % in Ganterschwil. The municipality had 4875 inhabitants (as of 2018) on 21.8 km² and lies around 36 km as the crow flies from our base in Wallisellen.
