Moving in Thurgau – from Frauenfeld to Lake Constance

Thurgau is named after the Thur, which crosses it from south-east to north-west. To the north it borders Baden-Württemberg, the canton of Schaffhausen and Lake Constance (Bodensee); in the south, the borders with St. Gallen and Zurich meet at the Hörnli. Of the canton's 994 km², 115 km² lie in Lake Constance, and 61 per cent of the total area is used for farming.

Five landscapes, five moving areas

At 991.1 metres on the flank of the Hohgrat, the canton's highest point is not even a thousand metres high. Steep mountain roads are therefore rarely the issue; long access roads to farms and hamlets are more likely to be. We clarify vehicle size and parking space during the free survey.

A growing canton

Thurgau is one of the cantons with the highest population growth: between 2000 and 2020 the population rose by 24 per cent. Growth has accelerated since 2018: in 2023 the population grew by 1.4 per cent across the canton, by more than 2 per cent in 21 municipalities, including the town of Weinfelden, and by over 4 per cent in three municipalities. At the end of 2024, 296,811 people lived in the canton. Of the 79,901 residents without a Swiss passport, 25,915 come from Germany. The canton also expects the sharpest rise in pupil numbers in Switzerland.

Metalworking and mechanical engineering, food, electronics and plastics carry weight; at the end of 2011, industry and construction employed around 36.6 per cent of the workforce. Public transport has been expanded continuously: in 2008, rail, bus and boat carried over 32 million passengers. Who attends the handover of my old Thurgau flat if you do the cleaning?
Our cleaning team comes to the handover with the property management. If they still find fault with any spot, we fix it immediately and free of charge. That way the flat is accepted in a single appointment, and you neither have to clean again nor arrange a second date.

How does moving into a new-build flat work in a growing town like Weinfelden?
We check with the property management in advance whether the lift and access are already released on moving day and where the lorry can stand next to any building sites. We protect fresh walls, the lift car and new floors with padding and floor protection. Our carpenters assemble wardrobes and beds straight away so that you can move in immediately.

How do you organise a move across the canton, e.g. from Aadorf to Arbon?
As a one-day move with a team that loads in the Hinterthurgau in the morning and unloads on Lake Constance in the afternoon. When is the best time for families with school-age children to move to Thurgau?
Ideally during the school holidays, so that the switch to the new school does not fall in the middle of a term. Because pupil numbers in Thurgau are rising sharply and holiday dates are in demand, it pays to enquire early. What applies if I move to Thurgau from Konstanz or Baden-Württemberg?
Then it is a move to Switzerland with customs clearance, which we handle completely: export in Germany and import into Switzerland. What should I consider when moving a piano on a Thurgau farm with a long driveway?
Above all the route from the lorry into the house, over gravel, a farmyard or steps. A piano transport with us costs from CHF 250.–; the final price depends on the instrument, the floor and this carrying route. Mention the piano at the survey, and we will plan enough carriers and protective material.

What are my options if the new flat on Lake Constance only becomes free later?
We store your furniture in the meantime in dry, climate-controlled and alarm-protected premises and deliver it on your moving-in day to Romanshorn, Arbon or the Untersee. That way you hand back the old flat on time, even if the tenancy by the lake starts later. The furniture stays packed and insured throughout.

What do you look out for when clearing a Thurgau farmhouse with barn and attic?
The quantity that builds up there over the years. We look at the attic, barn and cellar during the survey and sort out with you what comes along and what we take away for proper disposal. We factor steep attic stairs and uneven farmyards into team size and carrying route.
